About the Course

Cognitive Enrichment for Secondary School (CogE-S) is a cognitive intervention program that can be applied in a one-on-one setting or in the middle- and high school classroom. For underachieving students, CogE-S is used as a remediation program, while higher functioning learners utilize the program as an enrichment tool for enhancing their problem-solving skills.

CogE used as part of a classroom curriculum is aimed at enhancing students’ cognitive functions necessary for academic learning and achievement. The fundamental assumption of the program, based on the Feuerstein theories of Structural Cognitive Modifiability and Mediated Learning Experience, is that intelligence is dynamic and modifiable, not static or fixed. Thus, the CogE program seeks to correct deficiencies in fundamental thinking skills by providing students with the concepts, skills, strategies, operations, and techniques necessary to function as independent learners, increase their motivation, develop metacognition, and help them “learn how to learn.”The CogE-S program provides a cognitive basis for successful curricular learning, especially in such challenging areas as STEM (Science, Technology, and Mathematics) and higher-level text comprehension.

Course Syllabus:

  • Introduction to the theory of Structural Cognitive Modifiability;

  • Introduction to the Theory of Mediated Learning Experience (MLE);

  • Analysis of cognitive functions on the Input, Elaboration, and Output phases of the mental act;

  • Goal and sub-goals of the educational application of the CogE-S program;

  • CogE-S lesson planning and preparation of “bridging to curriculum” exercises;

  • Comprehensive instruction in the use of the following CogE-S tools: Introductory set of tasks, Categorization, Temporal Relations, Instructions, Family Relations, and Illustrations;

  • The mastery of CogE-S theory and tasks is evaluated by means of a questionnaire presented to the course participants on the last day of the course.

Prerequisites

The course is open to university students, educators, psychologists, and other professionals interested in cognitive intervention with middle- and high-school students. A previous study of the Feuerstein theory is not required, but the course participants are encouraged to read in advance the theoretical material available at:

www.feuerstein-institute.org/resources/theoretical-materials/

Learning Materials

Course participants will receive 6 sets of CogE-S tasks, Teaching Diagrams, and Page-by-Page Guidelines for CogE-S teachers.

Certification

Course participants will be awarded a Certificate of Cognitive Enrichment Mediator for Secondary School upon successful completion of the entire course requirements. The certificate is valid for four years from its issue date and is renewed subject to the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) conditions: a. Submittal of a verification form of CogE-S implementation to Feuerstein Institute https://feuerstein-institute.org/training/continuous-professional-development/ reflecting at least 30 hours of work with CogE-S instruments; b. Participation in annual online or “live” CPD seminars organized by the Feuerstein Institute and/or local Authorized Training Centers, or attendance of three additional Feuerstein courses.
